The gun violence epidemic in America continues to shatter communities large and small across our country, including in our district. In 2022, I was proud to vote for sensible, bipartisan gun violence legislation - the first such legislation to pass Congress in over 30 years - but much more needs to be done.
The heroin and opioid epidemic has claimed too many loved ones, shattered too many lives, and broken too many families across our country. Over the past few years, the proliferation of fentanyl use has only made the crisis worse.
I have been a strong supporter of women’s reproductive rights throughout my time in Congress. I believe that the decision to have an abortion is best left as a private decision between a woman and her doctor, not by politicians and the government.
As the son of a civil rights lawyer, preserving a healthy democracy will always be one of my foundational priorities. There has been an alarming increase in attempts to disenfranchise voters in states across the country, and the federal government has a duty to stand against those anti-democratic efforts.
Protecting America’s national security is an essential role of the federal government, as is supporting the men and women in uniform who serve our nation and protect our freedom.
America should always stand on the side of democracy, including helping to support Ukraine as it defends itself from Putin’s unjust invasion of their sovereign territory.
As a successful businessman who built a high-tech manufacturing company, I know how important it is for the government to pursue policies that help small businesses grow and create jobs in their communities.
I proudly support the rights of workers to collectively bargain for better wages and better benefits, and I am proud that Illinois became the first state to protect those rights in our state’s constitution. I’m committed to protecting those rights at the federal level and will oppose efforts to weaken the power workers have when they organize.
I support Israel’s right to defend itself from heinous terrorism that endangers innocent civilians, but they must do so in accordance with the rules of war that democracies must strive to follow. The loss of any innocent life is heartbreaking, and we must do more to help support civilians on both sides of this conflict who’ve been hurt or displaced.
