Foster and New Democrat Coalition Release Principles for Commonsense Immigration Reform
Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Bill Foster (IL-11) joined the New Democrat Coalition in releasing a framework for commonsense immigration reform designed to build an immigration system that reflects our American values and the need to grow our economy, reunite families, and ensure that immigrants can successfully integrate and fully participate in our communities, economy, and civil society. The New Democratic Coalition is a group of pro-business Democrats that form the largest moderate caucus in the U.S. Congress.
“For years our immigration system has been left to rot. Our system depends too much on detention and deportation at a huge cost to governments and families,” said Foster. “It is past time for Congress to take action to pass common sense immigration reform that provides law enforcement officials with the tools they need to secure our borders, a tough but fair path to citizenship for the 11 million undocumented immigrants already in the country, and a more secure and efficient system for legal immigration.”
“Passing comprehensive immigration reform isn’t just pro-family, it’s pro-growth – especially for the real estate market. Many families with an undocumented member have the means to become homeowners but lack the legal certainty that they will be allowed to stay in our country. When we pass comprehensive immigration reform and provide that legal certainty, real estate agents that I talk to are predicting a mini-boom in local real estate as newly legalized immigrants take their first step into home ownership.”
“The path to passing comprehensive immigration reform isn’t simple, and the final plan will likely contain some painful compromises. But when we create a path to citizenship for the millions of immigrants in the US – who are good, law abiding members of society who just want to build better lives for themselves and their families – we all benefit.”
The New Democrat Coalition principles for reforming our country’s broken immigration system include:
- Reforming our employment-based and family-based immigration system to reduce bureaucratic backlogs, ensure family reunification and spur job growth, innovation, entrepreneurship and American competitiveness in the global economy.
- Ensuring sufficient resources are dedicated to border enforcement, while recognizing the importance of having smart enforcement and investments in infrastructure and resources that will ensure fluid legal trade, travel, and tourism.
- Ensuring any mandatory employment verification system not only prevents illegal employment, but also does not place an undue burden on business owners, while also ensuring the protection of all American workers.
- Addressing the undocumented immigrants who are part of our communities through a pathway to citizenship.
The principles were developed by the New Democrat Coalition Immigration Task Force. The New Democrat Coalition is dedicated to maintaining America’s standing as the world’s strongest, most successful nation. Founded in 1997, the New Dems believe firmly in the power of American ingenuity and innovation, and are focused on finding ways to foster and harness this creativity to grow our economy, create new American jobs, and ensure a safer and more secure future for our country.
