Foster Statement on Proposed Cuts to National Science Foundation

July 12, 2017

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Foster (D-IL) issued a statement on the National Science Foundation's reported cuts if the President's FY2018 Budget Request takes effect. The agency estimates that 13,000 researchers, professionals, and students could be affected by the proposed budget cuts.

"I greatly appreciate the response from the National Science Foundation, and I am also deeply concerned about the effects of the President's FY2018 budget proposal on researchers and students," Foster said. "The National Science Foundation supports basic research in our colleges and universities, and it should receive the kind of sustained funding that will enhance our country's leadership in science and innovation. I strongly encourage my colleagues in Congress to reject these kinds of cuts, which would severely harm our country's long term research capabilities."

The letter from the National Science Foundation was a response to a letter Congressman Foster led on June 9, 2017 requesting information on job losses if the President's Budget Request is enacted.
