Foster: Supreme Court ruling makes clear Trump not above the law
U.S. Rep. Bill Foster weighed in on the Supreme Court decision pertaining to access of President Donald Trump's tax records.
The high court voted, 7-2, to uphold the Manhattan district attorney's demand for Trump's tax returns in the case of Trump v. Vance. The district attorney issued a grand jury subpoena to an accounting firm that had financial records of Trump and one of his businesses.
"The Supreme Court has made it clear that no one, not even the President of the United States, is above the law," Foster, D-Naperville, said in a statement. "He is not immune from criminal investigation and cannot ignore congressional oversight."
The court also ruled to keep a hold on the president's financial records that Congress has been seeking for more than a year. Democrats in Congress have been asking for Trump's records as part of their oversight of the executive branch.
"While these cases are sent back to lower courts for continued review, Congress – including the House Financial Services Committee on which I serve – will continue to conduct oversight on behalf of the American people, and defend the separation of powers that is so integral to our democratic system," Foster said in the statement.
