Foster: Supreme Court striking down abortion law a 'major victory'
U.S. Rep. Bill Foster praised the Supreme Court’s ruling this week against a Louisiana law restricting access to abortion clinics.
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled 5-4 in the June Medical Services v. Russo case against allowing the law in Louisiana. Foster, D-Naperville, said in a statement the law was passed to keep women from getting an abortion in that state.
“Today, the Supreme Court struck down a blatant attempt to undermine a woman’s right to control her reproductive health – a major victory for everyone who has been fighting to protect reproductive rights and access to safe abortion care for all women,” Foster said in the statement.
The Democratic congressman also criticized efforts around the county to implement legal burdens on those attempting to get an abortion. He added that he feared this effort would not be the last anti-abortion piece of legislation to be taken to the courts.
“As a scientist, I find it deeply disturbing when lawmakers try to make it more difficult for women to access reproductive health care or interfere with the patient-physician relationship,” Foster said in the statement. “A woman’s right to choose is the law of the land, and efforts to roll back reproductive freedoms are fundamentally unconstitutional and dangerous.”
The Louisiana law pertinent to this case is the same one several mostly Republican members of Congress weighed in on earlier this year. The lawmakers asked the Supreme Court to reconsider and, if appropriate, overrule Roe v. Wade, the key 1973 ruling in which the court determined the right to an abortion to be constitutional.
U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski, D-Western Springs, was one of the few Democratic members to also sign onto the request. He said at the time he agreed with the intention of the law and did not think it imposed an undue burden.
Lipinski’s stance drew the ire of several protesters at his Congressional office in Lockport in early January. Some came dressed in red capes like the characters in “The Handmaid’s Tale.”
