Foster Statement on Funding Bill

February 15, 2019

Washington, DC – Today, Congressman Bill Foster (D-IL) issued the following statement on the funding deal to keep the government open:

"I support this legislation because it is a commonsense compromise to keep our government open. It prioritizes border security without a wasteful investment in President Trump's border wall. No compromise is ever perfect, but Congress has a duty to fund the government. It is my hope that we can now move on and address the priorities that are important to Americans, including gun violence prevention, affordable health care, and growing the economy. It is also my hope that the President will work with us to address these priorities instead of using a fabricated national security emergency to appease his political base. Contrary to what the President has repeated, there is no national security emergency on our southern border, and he should not use this opportunity to declare a national emergency that simply does not exist. A wall on our southern border with Mexico is a colossal waste of resources and taxpayer money that will do nothing to soothe the imaginary immigration problem our President has concocted in his mind."
