Foster Statement on Sexual Harassment in Congress
WASHINGTON, DC - I absolutely condemn sexual assault and sexual harassment. No one should have to work in a professional environment where this kind of behavior is condoned. Whether it’s the disgusting and disturbing events in Alabama or the events with Senator Franken, Congressman Conyers, and President Trump, any type of this behavior is unacceptable. Anyone engaging in sexual harassment or assault must be held accountable, and I think Senator Franken and Congressman Kihuen should step down. It’s clear that the U.S. House system for handling sexual harassment complaints is broken, and we need to find a better way to handle these complaints. No office should use taxpayer money for settlements in these cases nor should they operate in secret. Both parties should come together and make sure that anyone who experiences sexual harassment in an office has a clear and transparent path to report the behavior without fear of professional or personal retribution.
