Foster Statement on So-Called Balanced Budget Amendment

April 12, 2018

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Bill Foster (D-IL) issued the following statement after the failure of the so-called Balanced Budget Amendment to the Constitution of the United States:

"I opposed the so-called Balanced Budget Amendment, because it is nothing but a Republican assault on Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. Just days after the Congressional Budget Office reported the GOP tax plan will explode the deficit by more than $1 trillion by 2020, Republicans are targeting America's seniors and vulnerable communities so they can pay for their tax giveaway to big corporations and the wealthiest families. Congress should work to responsibly reduce the deficit while making investments in priorities like education, infrastructure, scientific research, and protecting the retirement security of millions of Americans. Instead, Republicans have chosen a path of fiscal hypocrisy and irresponsibility as they fill the pockets of their friends and campaign donors."
