Foster Demands Immediate Answers From Hines VA

Washington, DC – In light of recent allegations of Veterans Affairs officials potentially falsifying information on long appointment wait times for veterans, Congressman Bill Foster is demanding answers from the Director of the Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital, Ms. Joan M Ricard.

Recently, allegations have surfaced claiming staff at the Phoenix VA hospital in Arizona have been recording appointment request information outside of the computer system in order to evade accountability for long wait times for appointments and other customer service metrics.  It is possible that as many as 40 veterans died while on the wait list. 

On May 8, 2014, Foster wrote Director Ricard asking for assurance that all data at the Hines VA is being consistently and accurately recorded in their computer system.

Now, a similar allegation is being made against the Hines VA Hospital. According to reports, a whistleblower in Chicago is claiming that employees at the Hines VA have maintained a secret waiting lists of patients to keep reported wait times low.

“If proven true, these allegations at both the Phoenix and the Hines VA would be an outrageous betrayal of the public’s trust and a dereliction of the government’s basic obligation to take care of our soldiers after their service,” said Foster. “Our veterans deserve answers and immediate action.”
