Foster Statement on Proposed Cuts to NIH and NASA

July 26, 2017

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Bill Foster (D-IL) issued a statement on the responses from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and National Institutes of Health (NIH) on the number of cuts if the President's FY2018 Budget Request takes effect.

"It's clear this budget would have an adverse effect on scientific research," Foster said. "Each of these agencies contributes to research and innovation in our country. The work done at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration inspires the next generation of young scientists and eliminating NASA's Office of Education will only make it harder to recruit the next generation of scientists. Researchers at the National Institutes of Health conduct cutting edge research on diseases that afflict millions of Americans. Instead of eliminating funding for our national science agencies, we should increase funding to maintain our country's leadership in science and innovation."

Each of these letters was a response to a letter Congressman Foster led on June 9, 2017 requesting information on job losses if the President's Budget Request is enacted.
