Press Release: Foster Votes in Favor of Russia Sanctions
Washington, DC - Today, Congressman Foster (D-IL) voted in favor of H.R. 3364, a bill that would establish sanctions against Russia for its interference in the 2016 elections, its illegal annexation of Crimea, and its military activities in eastern Ukraine. The legislation would also impose sanctions on Iran for their destabilizing actions and target North Korea’s nuclear weapons program.
“The looming uncertainty of the relationship between our current President and Russia calls on us to protect our democracy and the freedom of every American to participate freely in elections without the risk of foreign interference,” Foster said. “We must also stand up for the people of Ukraine who continue to endure a war and the people of Crimea whose national sovereignty was violated. This legislation sends a clear message to President Putin – we will not tolerate meddling of any kind in sovereign countries’ affairs. It also sends a clear message to President Trump – the interests of the United States and our allies should remain your only priority.”
In 2013, widespread unrest followed a contested agreement with the European Union in Ukraine that led to the departure of then President Viktor Yanukovich and Russian military interference in Eastern Ukraine. The following year, Vladimir Putin ordered the annexation of Crimea, a Ukrainian territory.
