Rep. Foster Statement on Extreme Republican Budget Proposal
Washington, DC -- Congressman Bill Foster (IL-11) released the following statement on the House Republican budget proposal announced today:
“We need to cut spending and reduce our debt, but we need to do it in a responsible and balanced way. What Republican House leadership proposed today is more of the extreme, partisan ideology which voters strongly rejected last November.
“The Republican proposal would balance the budget on the backs of the middle class -- ending the Medicare guarantee and making devastating cuts to critical programs, all while protecting tax breaks for the wealthiest. We are already facing deep and irresponsible cuts to education and R&D under sequestration, but this will go even further, hurting our region’s economic competitiveness at a time when we can least afford it.
“Not only would this program be devastating for working families, but it would be devastating for our economy which is still recovering from the greatest economic collapse we’ve seen since the Great Depression.
“It’s time to end the partisan political posturing and pass a responsible and balanced budget which cuts wasteful spending where it is prudent and ensures everyone pays their fair share.”
