Rep. Foster Statement on President Obama’s Argonne Visit
Washington, DC – Today, Congressman Bill Foster (IL-11) released the following statement on President Obama’s visit to Argonne:
“As the Representative of Illinois 11th District, which includes parts of Argonne National Lab, I was glad to see President Obama highlighting the important work they do which creates good jobs and supports our local economy. As a businessman and a scientist who worked at Fermi Lab for 22 years, I was also pleased to see the President highlight the need to invest in scientific research and keep our innovative edge.
“As the President mentioned, Argonne faces deep cuts if we don’t find a balanced alternative to the sequestration cuts. Cutting investments in science and technology is bad nationally for our economic competitiveness and bad for the 11th District which would see ripple effects throughout our local economy. Now more than ever, we need these kinds of investments to maintain America’s a competitive advantage. That’s why last week I testified before the House Budget Committee about the importance of protecting investments in research and development.
“I am proud to join President Obama in his call to make America a magnet for good jobs and couldn’t agree more that the way to do that is to keep investing in research and development that gives us an edge in the global market and protects our ‘spirit of innovation.’”
