U.S. Rep. Bill Foster said he supports President Joe Biden’s move to pull all American troops out of Afghanistan.

The U.S. military completed the evacuation of thousands of Americans and Afghans this week by the Aug. 31 deadline.

“None of us will forget the heartbreaking scenes we’ve witnessed over the past few weeks, especially the deaths of the 13 service members who were killed in a heinous terror attack as they worked to protect innocent civilians,” Foster, D-Naperville, said in a statement. “The courage and selflessness of all those who’ve served over the last 20 years represent the very best of America.”

The congressman added the U.S. has a “moral obligation to support those who helped our mission” and that he is “proud that Illinois is playing a leading role in resettling refugees.”

Foster appeared to acknowledge the discord among some over the reasoning of the Biden Administration’s decision to withdraw troops.

“While we have a lot of questions to grapple with as a nation about the lives and resources spent over the past two decades in Afghanistan, one thing is indisputable: we owe a debt of gratitude to every man and woman who served in uniform during America’s longest war,” he said.
