Foster Announces Bipartisan Energy Legislation Signed into Law

Press Release

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Bill Foster (D-IL) and Congressman Steven Knight (R-CA) announced that the bipartisan Better Energy Storage Technology (BEST) Act was signed into law last week. The legislation authorizes $45 million to support the creation of three public-private partnership projects to develop energy storage technology that is commercially viable and can adequately support the electrical grid.

“I am proud to announce that this bipartisan legislation has been signed into law. The Better Energy Storage Technology Act will provide the sustained federal funding we need to promote new research in energy storage and more environmentally sustainable energy models,” Congressman Foster said. “Research on battery storage is the next frontier in energy development so that we can find ways to improve our country’s electrical grid and energy usage.  Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois already leads the way in new battery technology, and I am confident that this legislation will ensure we can build on its success. I am proud to work with my Republican colleague Representative Knight on this important legislation, and I thank him for joining me to make sure that the United States remains a leader in innovation and technology.”

"The BEST Act offers concrete and measurable goals to develop and produce the technology we'll need in the future." said Rep. Knight "With industrial sized energy storage capabilities, the decision to invest in renewable energy sources becomes that much easier and more viable. Affordable and plentiful energy is not only good for the American consumer, but will also create thousands of jobs in our district, where our climate and geography situates us perfectly to lead this new era in American energy independence. This is potentially a $100 billion industry and I am very grateful to Congressman Foster for helping us get this across the finish line."

Congressman Foster introduced H.R. 5160, the Better Energy Storage Technology (BEST) Act with Congressman Knight last April. The legislation was included in the first package of spending bills that President Trump signed into law last week.
