Foster Announces Support for Legislation to End Political Corruption
WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Congressman Bill Foster announced his support for H.R. 1, The For the People Act. This piece of legislation is a comprehensive set of reforms that would protect the right to vote, end the influence of big money in politics, and enact higher standards to end corruption in our political system.
“Our democracy is built on the fundamental principle that government is built for the people and by the people. Americans deserve a system of government able to make policy decisions based on the interests of hardworking Americans and the future of our country, not the personal financial interests of Members of Congress or wealthy campaign donors,” Foster said. “When I first entered public service, I divested my business interests to avoid even the appearance of a conflict of interest. This legislation provides essential reforms to our political system that enacts a series of important reforms that will restore confidence in our government, including protecting the right to vote and reducing political corruption. With more transparency and accountability, I hope that we can lessen political corruption, restore faith in our institutions, and return to a system of government that works for all Americans. We must work to end political corruption so that we can have a Congress that is ready and willing to work on strengthening access to affordable, quality health care, making our economy stronger, and fixing our broken immigration system.”
This legislation was introduced as public opinion polls suggest that Americans overwhelmingly have low confidence in elected officials. Ninety-six percent of Americans believe that government should be open and transparent, but only 30 percent believe that government is transparent.
