Foster Introduces Bipartisan Resolution to Promote Nuclear Security and the Work of the International Atomic Energy Agency

December 2, 2021

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Bill Foster (D-IL) introduced a bipartisan resolution in support of the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) role in the promotion of nuclear security. The resolution confirms the agency's position as an indispensable organization for international nuclear safety, and it encourages the United States to play an active role to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons. The House resolution is cosponsored by Reps. Chuck Fleischmann (R-TN), Ami Bera (D-CA), Jim Cooper (D-TN), Jim McGovern (D-MA), Jeff Fortenberry (R-NE), John Garamendi (D-CA), Ro Khanna (D-CA), and Rick Larsen (D-WA).

Senator Ben Ray Luján (D-NM) has introduced a companion resolution in the U.S. Senate.

"I am proud to join my colleagues in both the House and Senate in this bipartisan initiative to prevent nuclear proliferation," Foster said. "Three decades after the end of the Cold War, nuclear nonproliferation is more important than ever. We must find ways to work together with our international partners to reduce the spread of nuclear weapons and materials. The work of the IAEA reducing and securing these weapons is critical to make the world safer for everyone."

"Since 1957, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has helped keep families safe around the world by ensuring nuclear energy is not used maliciously or militarily," said Senator Luján. "Given the unique challenges of the 21st century, it's critical that the IAEA is fully funded and supported to ensure their continued success for generations to come."

"The IAEA plays an indispensable role in maintaining global peace, security, and safety through its support of international nonproliferation and nuclear security, as well as nuclear safety. I am proud to co-sponsor this resolution calling upon my colleagues in Congress to ensure that this vital organization is appropriately resourced to carry out these vital missions," said Congressman Chuck Fleischmann.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is the organization tasked with verifying that states comply with their commitments under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and other non-proliferation agreements. It was founded in 1957.
