Foster Introduces Two Pieces of Legislation to Help Fight the Opioid Epidemic
Washington, D.C. – Yesterday, Congressman Bill Foster (D-IL) introduced two pieces of legislation to help fight the opioid epidemic: the Expanding Opportunities for Recovery Act, and the Examining Opioid Treatment Infrastructure Act.
The Expanding Opportunities for Recovery Act would allow states to be awarded grants through the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, so they can expand capacity for prevention and treatment.
The Examining Opioid Treatment Infrastructure Act would direct the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to evaluate and report on outpatient and inpatient needs across the country, helping inform where additional resources need to be directed to treat patients and those recovering from addiction.
“As we continue to fight the COVID-19 pandemic, we cannot forget that substance use disorder remains a major challenge for millions of Americans,” Foster said. “I’m proud to introduce legislation to help provide resources for communities in Illinois and across the country to strengthen their ability to provide prevention and treatment programs for people who are struggling and need help.”
