Foster Statement on January 6th Committee Criminal Referrals Against Former President Trump

December 19, 2022

Washington, DC – Today, Congressman Bill Foster (D-IL) released the following statement after the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol issued criminal referrals against former President Trump:

"In a democracy no one is above the law, not even the President. The evidence uncovered by the January 6th Committee makes clear that the former President betrayed his oath of office to defend the Constitution and broke the law in an attempt to illegally stay in power. The criminal referrals announced today are no cause for celebration, but are an important and necessary step to make sure nothing like January 6, 2021 ever happens again.

"Now, it is the Department of Justice that will decide whether or not to pursue criminal charges against the former President. We must respect the independence of DOJ and trust they will make a determination solely based on the evidence and the rule of law.

"I thank the Members of the January 6th Committee, both Democrats and Republicans, for their tireless work to uncover the facts of what happened on that day."
