Foster Statement on Bipartisan COVID Relief Package
Washington, DC – Today, Congressman Bill Foster (D-IL) issued the following statement on the bipartisan COVID relief package introduced in the House:
"I support this bipartisan package because it is a useful down payment that will provide additional economic relief for hardworking American families and small businesses struggling to make ends meet. It will also deliver critical resources needed to effectively deploy vaccines throughout the country.
"Through this legislation we're providing billions of dollars to accelerate the free and equitable distribution of vaccines to as many Americans as possible as soon as possible so that we can save lives and defeat this virus.
"In addition to extending enhanced unemployment insurance and providing more PPP funding to help keep small businesses afloat, this package includes several key measures that will offer immediate relief like rental assistance for families struggling to stay in their homes, direct economic impact payments of up to $600 per adult and child, nutrition assistance for hungry families, and tax credits to help support paid sick leave for workers.
"This relief package isn't perfect, and it doesn't include relief for local governments and municipalities, like those in our District that have been on the front lines of this pandemic from day one. That's an issue that the new Congress must tackle in the weeks to come.”
