Foster Statement on End of War in Afghanistan

August 31, 2021

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Bill Foster (D-IL) issued the following statement on the end of America's 20-year war in Afghanistan:

"I support President Biden's difficult decision to end our indefinite military presence in Afghanistan and bring this 20-year war to an end. None of us will forget the heartbreaking scenes we've witnessed over the past few weeks, especially the deaths of the 13 servicemembers who were killed in a heinous terror attack as they worked to protect innocent civilians. The courage and selflessness of all those who've served over the last 20 years represent the very best of America.

"We have a moral obligation to support those who helped our mission, and I am proud that Illinois is playing a leading role in resettling refugees.

"While we have a lot of questions to grapple with as a nation about the lives and resources spent over the past two decades in Afghanistan, one thing is indisputable: we owe a debt of gratitude to every man and woman who served in uniform during America's longest war."
