Foster Statement on Opening of Impeachment Inquiry

September 24, 2019

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Bill Foster (D-IL) issued the following statement after the Speaker of the House announced the House of Representatives will move forward with an impeachment inquiry into President Trump:

"I fully support Speaker's Pelosi's decision to formally open an impeachment inquiry, especially given President Trump's admission that he requested the Ukrainian President investigate his political opponent, and the Senate's unanimous demand for the immediate release of the whistleblower complaint.

"Last month, I called for an impeachment inquiry to begin after I reviewed evidence presented by Special Counsel Mueller that detailed multiple actions taken by the President to obstruct justice.

"On the Financial Services Committee, on which I serve, I have seen President Trump attempt to block legitimate Congressional investigations into the role of foreign money in transactions by the Trump Organization, Deutsche Bank, and others.

"Now, the President is blocking a whistleblower report that the Inspector General of the intelligence community has deemed both credible and urgent from being turned over to Congress as required by law. This is further evidence of President Trump's disregard for the rule of law and our Constitution.

"Congress must uphold its duty to hold the President accountable for his actions and bring the facts to light on behalf of the American people."
