Foster Statement on State of the Union Address

February 4, 2020

Washington, DC – Tonight, Congressman Bill Foster (D-IL) issued the following statement in response to President Trump's State of the Union address:

"As expected, President Trump continues to try and take credit for the Obama economic recovery. The fact is that both job growth and economic growth are slower under President Trump than under President Obama. Under Obama, the stock market tripled, and unemployment was cut in half – President Trump hasn't come close to matching that record.

"Instead, President Trump has pursued policies to benefit the wealthiest Americans and the biggest corporations. He's spent three years trying to dismantle the Affordable Care Act and eliminate protections for people with pre-existing conditions. He's damaged America's standing in the world by abdicating leadership in combating climate change and through his failed foreign policy that has left our nation less secure. He's repeatedly used fear and bigotry to attack immigrant communities. The President has also abused the power of his office to benefit his reelection campaign, for which he was rightly impeached.

"Simply put, the record of this President is one of broken promises, cruel policies, and unprecedented corruption. If President Trump was serious about uniting the country, he would tell the Senate to pass House-passed legislation that has the support of an overwhelming majority of the American people, including commonsense gun violence measures and legislation to lower prescription drug prices."
