Foster Statement on Trump Administration's Cancellation of Briefings to Congress on Foreign Election Interference

August 31, 2020

Washington, DC – Today, Congressman Bill Foster (D-IL) issued the following statement following the cancellation of all election security briefings for the Congress by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence:

"Rank-and-file Members of Congress deserve access to important information about national security threats like ongoing foreign interference in our electoral process.

"For Congress to operate properly, its Representatives must be placed in a position of enormous public trust. Although I do not serve on national security committees in the House, I have seen our nuclear weapons taken apart. I have had detailed discussions with experts on our nuclear weapons designs, trigger safety mechanisms, and survivability against enemy threats.

"The idea that important facts about foreign interference in our elections are somehow too sensitive to be discussed with Members of Congress is, to put it bluntly, malarkey – and once again raises the question: What is President Trump trying to hide?"
