Foster Statement on UAW Strike
Washington, DC - Tonight, Congressman Bill Foster (D-IL) issued the following statement after the United Auto Workers (UAW) initiated a strike following stalled negotiations with the Big Three auto manufacturers:
"Strong unions built the American middle class and have been vital to the economic security of hardworking families in my district, including in Belvidere, where the community grew over the past several decades around an iconic assembly plant that’s now been idled by Stellantis. Our office, together with the Governor and local officials, have done everything within our power to give Stellantis attractive options to settle this strike in a way that provides a future for the Belvidere plant, and we will continue to extend those efforts if Stellantis chooses to go down that path with us.
“I have always supported protecting the right of workers to organize and collectively bargain. I'm proud to stand in solidarity with the United Auto Workers as they exercise their right to go on strike for the pay, benefits, and job security they deserve.
"I call on both parties to continue communicating in good faith to reach an equitable agreement that keeps assembly plants open while recognizing and respecting workers' rights.”
