Foster Votes to Defend Reproductive Health Rights Against Dangerous Assaults, Enshrine Roe v. Wade Protections into Law
Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Bill Foster (D-IL) voted to defend women’s constitutional right to reproductive health care with H.R. 3755, the Women’s Health Protection Act. Amid a dangerous assault on women’s basic health freedoms – from statehouses across the country to the U.S. Supreme Court – this landmark legislation enshrines into law the vital protections of Roe v. Wade and secures the right to reproductive care for all women across America.
“As radical lawmakers across the nation wage an all-out assault against reproductive rights, I proudly voted to defend every woman’s basic health freedoms,” said Rep. Foster. “In Illinois, we’ve guaranteed the right to abortion care under state law, protecting it even if Roe v. Wade were to be overturned by a far-right Supreme Court. It’s time that we enshrine the right to choose into federal law as well, protecting access to reproductive health care, including abortion care, for women in every state. The American people overwhelmingly support access to safe, affordable reproductive care for all – and I am proud to stand with them in this fight.”
The Women’s Health Protection Act codifies the constitutional right to abortion care as found in Roe and reaffirmed in many subsequent decisions for nearly half a century. It establishes the federal statutory right for health care providers to offer abortion care and the federal right for patients to receive that care, free from state restrictions.
