Foster Statement on SUPPORT for Patients and Communities Act
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Bill Foster (D-IL) issued the following statement on his support for H.R. 6, the SUPPORT for Patients and Communities Act:
“I voted for this legislation because it provides a critical expansion of medication-assisted treatment for individuals who struggle with opioid dependency by expanding the types and number of medical providers who have the authority to prescribe buprenorphine to treat opioid dependency. I am also pleased that my bipartisan legislation was included in the final bill.
The opioid crisis will require that Congress provide a long-term and sustainable investment in our medical community. We still need to do more to expand access and improve care for individuals who suffer from opioid dependency, but this bill is a good bipartisan first step.”
In May, Congressman Foster introduced bipartisan legislation to help women and infants with opioid dependency that was included in the final version of the SUPPORT for Patients and Communities Act. More information is available here.
