Will County officials had a chance to showcase some new technology while at the same time talk about the need for better training programs aimed at preparing people for manufacturing jobs of the future.

With dismal unemployment rates of 13.5 percent in Joliet 10 percent in Romeoville and more than 9 percent in surrounding communities such as Bolingbrook, Lockport and Plainfield, the Mobile Fabrication Lab's roll into the parking lot of Joliet Junior College represented a beacon a hope for U.S. Rep. Bill Foster (D-Naperville) and other community officials.

AURORA — At a forum at an Aurora church Tuesday, U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin and U.S. Rep. Bill Foster (D-Naperville) urged the U.S. House of Representatives to vote on legislation that would overhaul the nation's immigration system.

The plan would include a path to citizenship for the estimated 11 million immigrants who entered the country illegally.

"All we're asking for is a vote," Durbin (D-Ill.) said Tuesday at Ginger Creek Community Church. "We think it will pass."

Hailing it as what may be the best shot at meaningful immigration reform in their political careers, Sen. Dick Durbin and Rep. Bill Foster Tuesday teamed up with local Aurora business and community leaders to trumpet a bill recently passed by the Senate. The group fears a piecemeal approach in the House may tear apart legislation meant to address many of the hot-button issues surrounding immigration reform.

It's not so out-of-reach to think the next generation of entrepreneurs and innovators could get their inspiration from inside a modest looking mobile unit or workshop called a "Fab Lab."

On Monday, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's mobile Fab Lab that has been touring the country was parked out front of the SciTech Museum on Benton Street in Aurora.

It takes more than lasers and test tubes to perform the work that goes on each day at Argonne National Laboratory in Darien.

Each year the facility spends $300 million on procurements from other businesses, and on Aug. 21, area businesses can find out how they might become one of them.

"There's a perception that there is a wall around Argonne," said Alex Mitchell, digital media specialist in Argonne's department of communications, education and public affairs.

U.S. Rep. Bill Foster has introduced legislation targeting "notarios" who give immigrants fraudulent legal advice that can, at times, get them deported.

The Naperville Democrat said advertising for services to help immigrants gain legal status has increased, particularly on Spanish-language radio stations. But the advice given by so-called "notarios" can often be bogus, he said.
