U.S. Rep. Bill Foster introduced legislation that would require health care providers to give patients access to their medical records at no cost once a year if they need them.

Foster said that the Medical Records Access Fairness Act is a "commonsense" bill that removes an unreasonable financial burden for patients. He said the bill would help prevent the prohibitive cost for patients with chronic diseases or complex medical histories, according to a news release.

Washington, DC – Today, Congressman Bill Foster (D-IL) introduced the Medical Records Access Fairness Act, which would require health care providers to give patients access to their medical records at no cost once per year if they need them. According to the nonpartisan Government Accountability Office, fees that doctor offices may charge patients can impose an unnecessary financial burden on patients who request them, potentially affecting patient care adversely.

Bill Foster (D-IL) and Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX) introduced the Keep STEM Talent Act to provide lawful permanent resident status for certain advanced Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) degree holders. The bill would allow graduates with advanced STEM degrees to remain in the United States following their graduation and would remove barriers for STEM-educated international students who want to work in the United States. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) has introduced companion legislation in the Senate.

Foster, D-Naperville, joined the organization at a luncheon at Mistwood Golf Course in Romeoville to talk about the decennial count, which many local public officials, government bodies and organizations are already preparing for.

In his remarks, Foster emphasized the vast amount of federal dollars at stake, which makes counting every Will County resident vital for funding for social services.
