WASHINGTON, June 2 (Reuters) - The latest standoff over the U.S. debt ceiling, resolved just days before the government faced a devastating default, has prompted some to call for the country to ditch its self-imposed borrowing limit.
That's not likely to happen any time soon.
Washington, DC - Today, Congressman Bill Foster (D-IL) issued the following statement after voting in favor of H.R. 3746, the Bipartisan Budget Agreement, which raises the debt limit until January 2025:
“Today, I voted to prevent a devastating default, which would threaten the economic security of millions of Americans. While I’m relieved a bipartisan agreement came together, I’m disappointed that my Republican colleagues again brought our nation to the brink of economic collapse in order to advance a partisan agenda.
BELVIDERE — A federal deal to raise the debt ceiling will have a trickle down effect to the Stateline area.
Prior to the deal coming to the house floor for a final vote, lawmakers had to approve a "rule" which essentially means a deal and parameters to bring an item to the floor for a vote. The vote for that rule is where Republicans hit a snag.
The House adopted a rule for floor debate on the debt ceiling and spending curbs package after Democrats flooded in to keep the measure on track at the last minute.
The rule vote sets up the bill to pass Wednesday night as Congress faces a June 5 deadline to lift the nation's $31.4 trillion borrowing cap. Republican leaders ultimately lost 29 of their members on the procedural vote and the rule looked set to go down as the gavel was about to fall.
