Washington, D.C.—On the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, an important turning point in the fight for civil rights, Congressman Bill Foster spoke at Aurora University and released the following statement:
“Fifty years ago, Martin Luther King, Jr., spoke of his dream of freedom and equality throughout the country. As we mark that important moment in history and honor those who have fought for justice and equality, we must continue the fight to realize that dream.
One Illinois Democrat says immigration reform isn't just a moral issue-it's good for business. U.S. Rep. Bill Foster (D-Naperville) is appealing to business leaders to get behind comprehensive immigration reform, claiming passing the current Senate bill would increase the gross domestic product and reduce the national debt. He says the piecemeal approach favored by House Republicans, on the other hand, would hurt the economy.
Like many, I was deeply disappointed by the Supreme Court’s ruling last month in Shelby County v. Holder. By invalidating Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act, the Court did great damage to an act that was, along with the Civil Rights Act of 1964, one of the greatest legislative achievements of the civil rights era. AURORA — At a forum at an Aurora church Tuesday, U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin and U.S. Rep. Bill Foster (D-Naperville) urged the U.S. House of Representatives to vote on legislation that would overhaul the nation's immigration system.
The plan would include a path to citizenship for the estimated 11 million immigrants who entered the country illegally.
"All we're asking for is a vote," Durbin (D-Ill.) said Tuesday at Ginger Creek Community Church. "We think it will pass."
