Usually when U.S. Rep. Bill Foster visits a school in his district, he's checking out the science projects students created.

While the subject of science came up Wednesday afternoon, students from Metea Valley High School were more interested in the Naperville congressman's take on the recent government shutdown and net neutrality.

Nearly 100 students grilled Foster on those subjects and other matters the teens deemed important, such as the opioid crisis, global warming, and the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Bill Foster (D-IL) announced his guest for the State of Union Address next week. Ana Campa Castillo is a DREAMer who arrived in the United States from Mexico City when she was six years old.

WASHINGTON, DC - Last week, Congressman Bill Foster (D-IL) called on President Trump to take further action to combat the opioid epidemic. In a letter signed by 67 Members of Congress, Foster asked that the President declare the epidemic a national emergency and request full funding for the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and the Public Health Emergency Fund.

WASHINGTON, DC - I supported the three-week continuing resolution to give Republicans time to make good on their promise to debate and to hold a vote on immigration and the DREAM Act. Meanwhile, Republicans have done tremendous damage through their failure to bring even a single spending bill to the President's desk for a signature. The unending string of Republican continuing resolutions have been a continuing disaster for our military, our health care system, and communities fighting opioid and heroin abuse.

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Bill Foster (D-IL) issued the following statement on the government shutdown:

"This shutdown is entirely unnecessary and counterproductive to the mission to which we are charged as Members of Congress. At any time last year, Republican leadership could have negotiated a long-term budget deal, a solution for DREAMers, and an extension of CHIP funding to avoid this reckless brinkmanship.

WASHINGTON, DC - I voted against the continuing resolution, because it is just another temporary patch that does not address the problems we are elected to solve. Republican leadership has had months to negotiate a bipartisan deal to finalize a budget, provide funding for CHIP, and come up with a solution to keep DREAMers in this country - all things that a vast majority of Americans support. The DREAM Act would pass today if it were brought up for a vote, but Republicans refused to negotiate with Democrats to give these young people a way to stay in the U.S.

Scientists at Fermilab were told Tuesday by Secretary of Energy Rick Perry the particle physics research facility is one of the "jewels" of the United States.

"The things that you do right here in Fermi and the ability to change people's lives in a powerful way has never been greater than it is today," Perry said in a speech at an "all-hands" event in its headquarters in Wilson Hall.

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Bill Foster (D-IL) urged the director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) to retract any order that bans the use of particular words or phrases by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in budget requests. The letter was signed by 73 Members of Congress.

WASHINGTON, DC - I opposed the Republican Tax Plan, because it is a massive Christmas gift to large corporations and wealthy campaign donors that is paid with more than $1 trillion in new debt that our children must repay in the future. Hardworking Illinois families will be hit especially hard, a cruel blow on top of the $40 billion that Illinois already loses every year because our state pays far more in federal taxes than we receive back in federal spending.

WASHINGTON, DC - This resolution is yet another last minute stopgap measure that fails to provide solutions that hardworking Americans need from the people who represent them. We still have a long list of priorities to resolve. Congress has not voted on the DREAM Act to allow individuals who were brought to the United States through no fault of their own to stay in the country. We need to provide funding to combat the opioid and heroin crisis, and we need to stabilize health care marketplaces so that premiums do not skyrocket.
