WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Bill Foster (D-IL) introduced the bipartisan Smarter EPSCoR Act to ensure research dollars are distributed in an equitable manner. Congressman Frank LoBiondo (R-NJ) is also an original cosponsor of the bill. The legislation would correct the formula that determines eligibility for EPSCoR program funding so that it is based on a per-capita basis instead of a per-state basis. This change would give priority to researchers in states that are genuinely under-represented in NSF research grants regardless of the state's population.

For Metea Valley High School Principal Darrell Echols, true diversity is something that schools still need to keep working on.

At an event at Waubonsie Valley High School in Aurora Wednesday that focused on diversity, Echols shared a story that shows how far society needs to go to truly embrace differences among people.

Echols said his grandson came home from school following the November presidential election and said that a student had told him to "go back to Mexico."

That type of behavior isn't unusual, U.S. Rep. Bill Foster (D-Naperville) said.

"I want to ask everyone today to stop using the word ‘addict' because it's derogatory and it stigmatizes," Burke said Wednesday. "People have a medical disease. It's a substance use disorder. ‘Substance users' is what I try to say."

U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, a Democrat representing the 11th District of Illinois, fired back after President Trump's Wednesday morning tweets announcing a ban on transgender people in the military. In a series of messages posted around 8 a.m. Central, the president said transgender individuals will not be allowed to serve in the U.S. armed forces.
